Zaatar is a mixture of Middle Eastern spices used in the Levantine kitchen. Zaatar literally means thyme in Arabic. It is also the generic term for the family of Lamiaceae plants (thyme, hyssop, savory, serpole, oregano, marjoram, mint pouillot).
It is consumed with bread and olive oil, simply by soaking or in the form of manakish. It also serves as a spice for flavouring dishes, salads or hummus.
